Etymology 1
right|thumb|source of the river at Bad Lippspringe
Of la gem origin, from the root gem-pro *lipjā. One common interpretation is that the Romanized form reflects a folk etymological adaptation to la lupus wolf.
The Germanic root is linked to verbs describing the river's flow characteristics, related to gmw-pro *sleupan to creep, sneak. Supporting evidence includes goh sliofan, glossed as la lūbricus slippery, smooth in Latin. Variants with and without s-mobile may represent parallel developments of the same root.Corinna Scheungraber, Friedrich E.
