Norwegian Bokmål no thumb|The location of Peter I Island in Antarctica. thumb|Peter I Island seen from the Southern Ocean in March 2017. thumb|The first landing on Peter I Island, on 2 February 1929. Etymology Named after Peter the Great Peter I of Russia (1672–1725). The island was discovered on 21 January 1821 by a Russian expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who named it in honour of the Russian emperor. Pack ice prevented Bellingshausen from landing on the island. The Norwegian name renders the same eponym with nb øy island, literally “Peter I Island”. The personal name represented here by Norwegian nb Peter and Russian ru Пётр Peter belongs to the Christian name tradition ultimately derived from Ancient Greek grc Πέτρος Peter, from grc πέτρος stone, rock, a word of Pre-Greek origin and related to grc πέτρα rock, rock formation. Norwegian nb Peter came through Latin la Petrus. The name is traditionally associated with Aramaic arc כיפא kēp̄ā stone, rock, the name Saint Peter was called in Aramaic; this represents a semantic correspondence rather than an established etymological source of the Greek noun grc πέτρος. Norwegian convention uses nb Peter for Russian rulers bearing the name, hence Peter I rather than a direct transcription of Russian ru Пётр.
