GNU gnu gnú gnû
German
de:+s
Etymology
First used by Georg Forster Georg Forster in 1778, transcribing de en gnu gnoo, which he himself had introduced, a year earlier, in his en - work A Voyage Round the World A voyage round the world. Further from de naq !nu:, possibly via South African de nl -. While nl gnoe is only attested later on (common af - being af wildebees), it may nevertheless have existed because it would have been difficult for Forster to borrow the word directly from naq -. The earliest-ever European attestation seems to be in a fr - text of 1775 (in the form fr nou).
