Etymology
la ine-pro *seh₁- *seǵʰ-
Traditionally related to la sēmen seed, itself from la ine-pro *seh₁-. However, Weiss dismisses any connections to la semen as semantically implausible, since there is no evidence connecting the god with seeds. Osthoff and Weiss independently propose an alternative derivation from la ine-pro *séǵʰos *seǵʰ-ó- powerful (via la itc-pro *Seɣomō) linking Semo to Segomo (from 1 cel-gau cel-pro *Segomū), a Celtic god, instead.Weiss Michael An Italo-Celtic Divinity and a Common Sabellic Sound Change Classical Antiquity University of California Press 36 2 October 1, 2017 0278-6656 10.1525/ca.2017.36.2.370 370–389
