Dutch
Etymology
First attested as jleke and yleke in the 13th century. Etymology nl unclear. Proposed etymologies from a hydronym *î-laki or from ofs yl callus (referring here to hardened soil) do not match the oldest attestations. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
