German
Alternative forms
de Roer archaic, de Ruhr Rhur Roir Rour obsolete
Etymology
From de gmh Rure, gmh Roir. de
Until the earlier 20th century, the spellings de Roer, Ruhr, Rur were all used, de Rur being actually the rarest. It then became standardised, however, because it was more German-looking than de Roer and avoided confusion with the Westphalian de Ruhr (which latter had by that time become widely known nationally and internationally because of the Ruhr Area).
