Etymology
From the en de Gaumer, which referred to a person who functioned as a moral censor or supervisor in an official capacity. The German surname is a derivative of the verb de gaumen to protect, to defend; to care for, a term now limited to Switzerland. This verb in turn comes from en gmh goumen, from en goh goumen, from en gem-pro *gaumijaną to heed, notice, observe, keep. The verb is ultimately a cognate of the obsolete English verb en yeme to observe, to pay attention.
