German
Etymology
de la-vul la grc arc sem-pro afa-pro
From de gmh aptīe, gmh abbeteie, from de goh abbateia (manuscript 12th c.), from de gmw-pro *abbadejā abbey. Analysable as de Abt -ei. The early ei-spellings are unusual, but perhaps caused by the hiatus; regular ī-forms are found alongside in Middle High German.
