Etymology
First attested as sconedorpe in 1237. Potentially a compound of nl dum cudele sack-shaped fishing net, bottom of a fish basket, basket used to catch birds and dum stert long narrow strip of land. The name was considered odd in the Middle Ages and the Count of Holland unsuccessfully tried to rename it to a compound of dum scoen clean and dum dorp village, settlement.
Compare for the current toponym nl De Asterd, nl De Staart and nl Halsteren and for the failed "upgrade" of the name nl Bonrepas, nl Kockengen, nl Koekange, nl Schoonebeek, nl Schoonoord and nl Wijngaarden.
