English
thumb|Shinola is a defunct American brand of shoe polish.
Etymology
A genericization from the trade name for a brand of shoe polish, through a combination of (1) sharing the same initial syllable as en shit (compare the same linguistic phenomenon in other expurgations such as en jiminy versus en jesus or en goshdarn versus en goddamn) and (2) a construable resemblance of the colour and texture of shoe polish to those of excrement; the trade name is synchronically equivalent to a proprialization of en shine -ola<id:from Latin oleum>.
