Etymology
From nb stor Britannia great Britain, literally “Great Britain”, after nb la Britannia Maior Great Britain. The name distinguished the island from la Britannia Minor Lesser Britain, namely nb Bretagne Brittany.
The second element is from nb la Britannia Britain. The Latin name, attested from the first century BCE, derives directly or through nb grc Βρεττανία Britain and grc Πρεττανία Britain. The Greek forms ultimately reflect a Celtic ethnonym conventionally reconstructed as early nb cel-bry-pro *Pritanī, perhaps from nb cel-pro *Kʷritanī or nb cel-pro *Kʷritenī. A further connection with nb ine-pro *kʷer- to do has been proposed but remains uncertain.
Parallel formations include nn Storbritannia, fo Stórabretland, is Stóra-Bretland, da Storbritannien, sv Storbritannien, de Großbritannien, nl Groot-Brittannië, fi Iso-Britannia, et Suurbritannia and en Great Britain.
