Etymology
pt. Eduardo de Almeida Navarro suggests it to be pt tpw - 1 tpw karaná 'i 'y ry carandá a palm tree diminutive suffix river river of the carandaís, small carandás 1, but he acknowledges tpw *karanda'i is not attested.Carandiru 555 1 The use of tpw ry instead of tpw 'y is quite unusual, and the evolution from tpw *Karanda'iry to pt Carandiru requires a series of phonetic changes that together are not trivial. A word that is attested and phonetically similar to pt Carandiru is pt tpw-lgp karanderu, itself borrowed from pt pt carneiro; in Dictionary of Old Tupi his 2013 dictionary, Navarro does not take into account Língua geral dos índios das Américas the only document that contains a record of this word. Being from Língua Geral Paulista, it is geographically compatible with the location of the Córrego Carandiru Carandiru Stream pt.
In any case, the name of the neighborhood is derived from the name of the stream, and the name of the penitentiary is derived from the name of the neighborhood.
