Perhaps from fi kuore. The name may have been derived with fi nne nominal, resulting in an oblique stem fi *Kuorante- (e.g. adessive singular fi *Kuoranteella). After metathesis, this could have become fi *Kuortane- (e.g. adessive singular fi Kuortaneella). The municipality (originally the village) was named after the lake.
