Alternative forms
nn Guiró Gýró alternative spellings
Etymology
From nn non Guðrún where the -n is lost following nationalisation of the preceding vowel (cf. non augun > nn augo). The diphthong is due to the -ð- getting a j sound before r, akin to nn veir from non veðr.
Pronunciation
nn [²ɡuyʷrou̯ː] Setesdal
Proper noun
nn proper noun f
nn dialectal Setesdal nn Gudrun
Usage notes
Because the diphthong in this name is identical to the Setesdal pronunciation of long y, is has often been written like Gyro (i.e. nn Gýró). However, this spelling would imply it’s pronounced with /ʝ-/ (palatalisation before Old Norse front vowels) and not /ɡ-/.
