Dutch
Etymology
First attested as odt nivelen in 1146. Perhaps from nl odt *niuwal, derived from either nl gem-pro *niwialhô- hollow, low-lying land (cognate to ang niwel leaning forward, steep) or gem-pro *niwialha- new house. Local folk etymology erroneously interprets the toponym as a compound of nl nieuw new and the hydronym nl Waal. Compare nl Aalst, nl Elst, nl Maasniel, nl Niel, nl Niel-bij-As, nl Nivele and de Waldniel.
