Etymology
(Gelderland) First attested as afrithon in the 11th or 12th century. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from a prehistoric hydronym gem-pro *Abhara with the dative plural form of the collectivising suffix odt -iþi-. An alternative etymology posits a derivation from ine-pro *Abharitôs, a hydronym derived from the root ine-pro *abh- bend outwards, shine or ine-pro *ap-. Not a compound of nl aa river, stream and nl voorde ford. Compare nl Asperen and de Asperden.
(Limburg) First attested as afordia in 1293. Etymology uncertain. The first attestation in Latin is likely a reinterpretation of the toponym as a compound of nl aa water, river and nl voorde ford, crossing. A proposed derivation from a compound of nl aa water, river and nl vrede enclosure, enclosed space is dubious.
