Etymology
From de gmh gemeze, from de goh gamiza (form only attested in a 13th-century manuscript). The variant de Gams f is from gmh gamz m, f, n, from goh *gamuz or goh *gamaz (probably a masculine or neuter). These forms can be derived from de la-vul *camōcius m, la *camōcia f, which also underlie most of the dialectal Romance forms in Switzerland and northern Italy, probably from an extinct Alpine language
(such as de xrr - or de xlg -), eventually perhaps from de ine-pro *kem- without horns, although this is speculative. A more western form of the same word is attested in la-lat camōx (5th century).
