Etymology
From nds gml mēlik, from nds osx miluk, from nds gmw-pro *meluk. The Westphalian forms generally seem to continue an osx *meluk, unless there had been some sort of secondary lowering. At least in parts of Sauerland, the underlying vowel is -i-.

nds Wis Miälke in’n Koffi? Do you want milk in your coffee?
nds 1896 Paul Bahlmann Münsterische Lieder und Sprichwörter in plattdeutscher Sprache Münster 52 & 119 Slaop, Kindken, slaop! / Dao buten geit en Schaop, / Dat hett socke witte Fötkes, / De Miälke smeckt so sötkes, / Slaop, Kindken, slaop! [...] Sleep, little child, sleep! / Outside there goes a sheep, / It has such white feet, / The milk tastes so sweet, / Sleep, little child, sleep! [...] What use is a cow that gives a bucket full of milk and then knocks it over with her tail?
From where would we get milk if we shouldn’t keep cows anymore? Those who’re most strongly set against the cattle are the professors. But I would like to hear the rumpus if we didn’t provide them any more milk for their coffee; they’re already saying that our milk is too thin, which after all is not our cows’ fault.
