From nl weg gone, away. The first word of this type is nl verreweg, attested in late nl dum verre wech far away by far. Other words were subsequently formed by analogy with verreweg, but lacked a clear semantic link to nl weg gone, away, thus transforming -weg into a true (and still productive) derivational suffix.
