dröhne
German
Etymology
de :bor gml:drōne<ety:from<gml:drāne<ety:inh<osx:drāna<ety:inh<gmw-pro:*drānu>>>>>> 1
Ca. 1600, from de gml drōne (variant of commoner gml drāne), from de osx drāna, from de gmw-pro *drānu, from de gem-pro *drēnuz.
The Low German form replaced older de Tren Tren(e), de Trän(e), from gmh trën trën(e), from goh trëno, from the Germanic ablaut variant gem-pro *drenô. This may have been reinforced by the desire to avoid homonymy with de Träne tear. The word was originally a masculine but became feminine in Early Modern German, probably under the influence of de Biene bee. Drones were at that time distinguished only by function; the fact that they were males was generally unknown. The aircraft sense is a semantic loan from cognate de en drone.
