Etymology
Not a native Latvian suffix, lv -ists occurred in many borrowings and is now fully integrated. Ultimately from lv grc -ιστής, like its English cognate en -ist (see etymology of en -ist).
Suffix
Added to nouns to form masculine nouns denoting members/followers of a principle, religion, philosophy, lifestyle, or system of belief (usually named by words in lv -isms), or who has a certain profession or activity, just like its English cognate lv -ism.
