From bar gmh sameȥtac sameȥtac, samȥtac, from bar goh sambaȥtag, from bar got *𐍃𐌰𐌼𐌱𐌰𐍄𐍉, an alteration (possibly dialectal) of earlier, Biblical got 𐍃𐌰𐌱𐌱𐌰𐍄𐍉. The altered Gothic form derives from bar gkm *σάμβατον Sabbath. Compare de Samstag, fr samedi, fro sambedi, rm somda, ro sâmbătă, hu szombat, cu сѫбота.
