Etymology
Ultimately borrowed from fi osx Sahso a Saxon, a Low German (a tribe/people inhabiting northern Germany, not to be confused with modern Saxony), possibly via fi gmq-osw saxe, ultimately from fi gmw-pro *Sahsō. Cognate with et saks a German, liv saksā (a) German. fi saksa sakset saksi claw claw saksi person Saxon Saksi sax seax.
Germans in general were identified with (Old) Saxons because contact with the German-speaking countries happened at first mainly via the Baltic Sea with people speaking Low German.
The surname, which is attested since at least 1424, is a demonstration of Hanseatic trade and contacts with (Low) Germans already in the Carolingian era.
