Etymology
nb, based on nb ny Maláŵi Malawi. The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is nb 1 1.
The name is traditionally explained from nb ny malaŵí flames. In Chewa oral tradition, Malawi was the name of an area around the lake, which was said to resemble flames or a mirage when viewed from the surrounding highlands. Early Portuguese sources rendered the name as Maravj or Maravy, whence the conventional name Maravi for the precolonial state in the region. The modern country adopted the name Malawi when it became independent in 1964, replacing the colonial name Nyasaland.
Parallel international adaptations include nn Malawi, da Malawi, sv Malawi, de Malawi, nl Malawi and en Malawi.
