Originally the name of the nearby lake, derived from fi smi, ultimately from fi smi-pro *ëlēmānčë highest, uppermost, topmost (whence se alimuš), because there are no lakes further upriver. A distant doublet of fi ylimmäinen (specifically its oblique stem fi ylimmäise-).
