Etymology
First attested as gilisa in 1012-1018. Perhaps derived from an ancient hydronym related to non gil gap, ravine. An alternative hypothesis proposes a compound derived from odt *gîsil twig, branch and nl lo light forest, but this proposed etymology does not match well with the oldest attestations.
