Etymology 1
From Old Norse non Sóli, with the inflected form non Sóla also attested. The further origin of the name is uncertain. It may originally have been an old fjord name. A tentative proposal connects it with nb svelle to swell, possibly referring to the slight elevation in the landscape around the medieval church at Sola.
