Finnish
Etymology
From earlier fi *-s-ta-i, from fi -s nominal + fi -ta (akin to fi -ea << urj-pro *-e-ta, like in fi -usta) + fi -i nominal, all noun-forming suffixes.
Suffix
noun stö
Forms collective nouns from nouns indicating individual things.
fi kirja book kirjasto library
fi laiva ship laivasto fleet
fi puu tree puisto park
fi puu tree puusto forest cover
fi oppi education, doctrine opisto academy, institute
Usage notes
Commonly, though not always, attached to the plural stem of nouns.
Declension
The most common genitive and partitive plural forms for fi -sto nouns are fi -stojen and fi -stoja, which correspond to declension type 1 (fi valo). Kielitoimiston sanakirja classifies many but not all three-syllable words with this suffix as type 2 (fi palvelu) despite the fact that the forms ending in fi -stoiden/fi -stoitten and fi -stoita are rarely used in practice.
