Etymology
First attested as Mescedi in 913, followed by Meskide (937), Messcede (958) and Mescide (997).Michael Flöer 2013 Die Ortsnamen des Hochsauerlandkreises Westfälisches Ortsnamenbuch 6 Bielefeld Verlag für Regionalgeschichte 343–345 Meschede 978-3-89534-946-1 Derived from de osx *Mēskithi, a formation containing the toponymic suffix -ithi. The meaning of the first element remains disputed:
According to Paul Derks, from osx masca noose, net, trap, yielding a hypothetical *Mask-ithi, from de gmw-pro *maskā, originally referring to a place where fishermen laid their nets or hunters set traps. Michael Flöer instead interprets the same element as referring to the winding course of the Ruhr or the network of surrounding streams. Compare ang masc mesh and non möskvi mesh.
According to Jürgen Udolph, from a de gem - stem related to de Maische mash, gmh meisch mash and en mash, all from de gmw-pro *maisk mash, mixture, reconstructing *Meisk-ithi, meaning approximately "place where muddy water emerges" or "marshy place". Udolph further compares ru мезга mezgá soft tissue beneath bark, associating the name with wet or muddy ground.
An older proposal by Maurits Gysseling connects the first element with de gem - und *maskōn- witch, borrowed from de la masca, itself from the Germanic word for mesh. This interpretation was questioned by Udolph and rejected by Derks, who argued that the corresponding goh masca witch was a learned borrowing and that personal designations are otherwise absent from this type of -ithi place name.
