Etymology
This has its origins in the region of Pohjois-Savo. Probably from a byname fi Kapa, from fi kapa (e.g. fi kapakala stockfish), referring to a 'hard' or 'tough' character. The original form of the surname appears to have been a longer fi Kapajakonen, in which fi kapa may have been affixed to fi Jakonen. Probably also from Karelian vernacular forms (e.g. fi Kapa) of fi ru Капитон. in both cases with fi nen.
