Etymology 1
From an East Central German word for “sow on heat”, derived from de gmh rangen to run back and forth, from the root of de gem-pro *wringaną to wring. Related with de wringen and de rangeln to scrap, wrestle. Note that the loss of initial w- in de Range is simply the regular High German development, whereas in de rangeln (which is of Low German origin) it has a different reason; see the lemma.
