mpi MPI
Finnish
Etymology
From fi urj-fin-pro *-mpi, from fi fiu-pro *-mpa. Cognate with hu -bb and the element -mb- in mdf сембе all and myv омбо other, myv томбале beyond.
Suffix
adjective
Forms comparative adjectives.
fi heikko weak heikompi weaker
fi matala low, shallow matalampi lower, shallower
fi ruma ugly rumempi uglier
fi suuri great, large suurempi greater, larger
Forms adjectives that indicate relative location from some nouns that indicate location. In most of these cases the noun has disappeared from the language as independent word but continues to exist as prefix, and some cases are used as postpositions indicating location.
fi esi- front, fore edempi located ahead of something else
fi lähi- close, near lähempi closer
fi perä aft part of something perempi located further aback
fi sisä inside sisempi inner
fi taka back, rear, hind taempi located behind something else
fi ulko- outside ulompi outer
Usage notes
Bisyllabic adjectives ending in fi -a or fi -ä change the final vowel to fi -e- before the comparative suffix is appended, but adjectives with three or more syllables do not (except in some dialects). In compound terms, only the headword counts. The stem is the same as in the genitive singular.
This change is likely identical to those seen in fi -ntaa and fi -ella.
In colloquial language, this rule is sometimes mistakenly applied in one direction or the other.
