Etymology
19th century, from de fr fraise, from de fro fraise tripe, ultimately from de la frēsus, past participle of la frendo frendere to grind. The French word first developed the sense “ruff, frill” by analogy with the appearance of tripe, and thence later the sense “milling cutter” by another analogy of appearance.
