-tid tid TID tið tíd tíð tiþ
Welsh
Alternative forms
cy -did
Etymology
From cy wlm -tit, from cy cel-bry-pro *-tid, from cy cel-pro *-tūss (stem cel-pro *-tūt-; compare sga -tu), from cy ine-pro *-tuHts (whence la -tūs abstract noun and got -𐌳𐌿𐌸𐍃 -dūþs).
Pronunciation
cy /tɪd/
Usage notes
/tɪd/ and /dɪd/ are variants of the same suffix. /tɪd/ (phonetically [tʰɪd]) is always spelt cy -tid whereas /dɪd/ would, in theory, be represented by cy -tid after an unvoiced fricative (phonetically [tɪd]) and by cy -did after other voiced sounds (phonetically [dɪd]). /dɪd/, however, does not at present occur in any Welsh words after an unvoiced fricative.
Suffix
cy suffix
forming abstract nouns, -ness, -ment
cy ieuanc young ieuenctid youth
Usage notes
-did causes i-affection of internal vowels.
