Etymology
Backformation of de nl Boeren, plural of nl Boer. The word originally means “farmer” in Dutch but also in several German dialects, which is probably why the form Bur was avoided in German. (The word de Bauer, and even more Bur as a dialectal form, may have the pejorative implication of an illiterate person. Compare en boor.)
