From en haw Kohala, of uncertain meaning. Sometimes mistakenly derived from haw kohola whale,Henry S. Washington, "Petrology of the Hawaiian Islands" in The American Journal of Science, 5th ser., Vol. V (1923), p. 474. which are plentiful in the area.
