Etymology
From nl Gelder, later form of nl Gelre.
Pronunciation
nl /ˈɣɛl.də.rə(n)/
nl Gel de ren
Proper noun
n
Geldern, Guelder city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
nl Gelre Guelders; historical duchy in the Low Countries
Usage notes
The form Gelre precedes and indeed gave rise to the later form Gelderen and originally referred only to the city in Germany, which was the capital of a duchy which was named after it. Today, however, the historical form Gelre (which developed regularly into later Gelder) refers exclusively to the historical duchy, whereas the modern form Gelderen (or simply German Geldern) is used to refer to the city.
