Old Irish
Etymology
From sga la -ātor. Cognate with br,cy -adur.
Suffix
1 m
Suffix appended to words to create an agent noun.
sga tuigithir to cover tugatóir thatcher
Usage notes
Not very productive in Old Irish, as it is found chiefly in words borrowed from Latin as a whole, e.g. sga preceptóir < la praeceptor, sga dictatóir < la dictātor, sga senatóir < la senātor. Formations using native roots, such as sga tugatóir thatcher from sga tuigithir to cover are rare; but the suffix becomes increasingly productive in Middle Irish and the modern languages.
