Norwegian Nynorsk
Etymology
Derived from obsolete name of the valley, *Kvidalen. In 1597 name Quidallen is already used as the name for the river basin of the lake, and not the valley. Later it became *Kvidulen, mentioned in 1646 by Swedish cartographer Hydraeus as Quädölen. 40 years later mentioned by another Swedish cartographer Stenklyft as Kuduhln, from *Kudulen, whence is the modern reconstructed name.
