Etymology
ibl that long ago, there lived an old man named "Tayambong", one of the prominent men in a certain place called "ibl Marishem" where the only route leading to Baguio was located. Every traveler passing the route has to cross a river, and used to ask Tayambong how deep the river for them is to cross. The old man answered ibl "ajo pinuweg" water is neck deep during these normal conditions but heavy during the rainy season.
One day, there were four Kalanguya salt traders, who used to go as far as Pangasinan, going to Baguio. Upon reaching the riverbank at Marishem, they approached and asked the old man "How deep is the river for us to cross?" The old man answered ibl "ajo binukow" water is neck-deep since it rained very hard yesterday. The four travelers insisted and proceeded crossing the river, thinking that the river was not deep as the old man said. In doing so, they drowned, and their ibl pasiking were seen floating along the river.
From that incident, the people living there named the place "Ambukdow", in memory of Tayambong's word "binukdow". However, the Kalanguya neighbors pronounced the word as "Ambuklaw". As soon as the government established schools that the spelling of the name was corrected to "Ambuklao".
