Etymology
li. Various proposed etymologies exist:
Of li qfa-sub - origin. Supported by the fact no obvious/clear cognates exist in other Germanic languages (except for westernmost Ripuarian gmw-cfr Plimp, li Plemp, which very well may be a borrowing from Limburgish or of the same substrate origin as proposed).nl A. A. Weijnen Etymologisch dialectwoordenboek 2003 Uitgeverij van Gorcum The Hague
li Plemper (which was analysed as a plural form), from li Wemper eyelash (cf. de Wimper and nl wimper) with l-epenthesis and p-anticipation, from a compound of a first element thought to have been derived from li grc ἴονθος downy hair and a second element that is a reduced form of li Brau, li Brou brow.nl F. Debrabandere Limburgs etymologisch woordenboek: de herkomst van de woorden uit beide Limburgen 2011 Zwolle
From li Flemp (note that pl- to fl- and vice versa is not an uncommon sound-shift in Limburgish), from earlier li vlimme fishbone, prickle of an ear of grain, from li dum vimme, an alternative form of dum vinne fin, from li gmw-pro *finnā, from li gem-pro *finnǭ, ultimately from li ine-pro *(s)peyh₂- pointy. It is also possible that li Flemp comes from this term instead.
From li plempe to blink. Debrabandere compares it with dialectal li pempelen to blink and Brabantian nl plinken to wink. It is also possible that the verb is derived from the noun and not the other way round.
