Finnish
Etymology
fi. A traditionally Savonian surname with the suffix fi inen. Attested since at least 1559; older attested forms include fi Koloman, fi Koleman, fi Kolemann, fi Kolimainen (none of them have -h-). Compare fi Solehmainen, which this (much more common) surname may have influenced. According to Vilkuna (1960), the surname may have been derived from a lost given name fi *Kole(h)ma; following Pentti Virrankoski, this name found in a farm name in Ylivieska (in Northern Ostrobothnia) already in the 16th century might not necessarily be of Savonian (but instead e.g. of Karelian) origin.Vilkuna, Kustaa. Pähkinäsaaren rauhan raja kansatieteellisessä katsannossa (1960). Historiallinen Aikakauskirja 4/1960 If the -h- is secondary, it may have been introduced for a similar reason as in fi huhmar (via fi Kolema- > ? fi *Koleema- > fi Kolehma-). Compare also the river name ru Колежма in Karelia, traced to Sami by Kuzmin (2014).Kuzmin, Denis.
