Dutch
Etymology
First attested as ambe in 1145, 1154 and 1165. Potentially derived from nl cel-pro *Ambios a personal name or nl gem-pro *Ambo a personal name suffixed with Gallo-Roman nl la -acum. Proposed derivations from cel-pro *ambi enclosure or an Indo-European hydronym are unlikely. Formerly an independent village.
