biber bīber
English
Biber (Danube)
Proper noun
1
A right tributary of the Danube river in Bavaria, Germany.
German
Alternative forms
de Bieber surname otherwise obsolete
Etymology
From de gmh biber, from de goh bibar, bibur, from de gmw-pro *bebru, from de gem-pro *bebruz beaver, from de ine-pro *bʰébʰrus. The spelling with ⟨i⟩ instead of ⟨ie⟩ is unusual. de Biber is perhaps the only inherited Germanic word in which /iː/ is spelt ⟨i⟩ without there being a special reason for this (e.g. homophone disambiguation as in de Lid, word-initial position as in de Igel, function-word character as in de mir).
