de iːdə 2
Etymology 1
From Late de gmh smide (15th c.), alteration of older gmh smitte, from de goh smitta (early also goh smiththa, seldom goh smidda), from de gmw-pro *smiþþjā, from de gem-pro *smiþjǭ. Cognate with nl smidse, en smithy.
The modern form, which had displaced de Schmitte by the 18th c., is an adaptation to the related verb de schmieden to forge. It is of Central German origin, likely influenced by de gml -, in which gml smēde was the prevalent form (already de osx smitha, if this is not an inexact spelling).
