Swedish
Etymology
From the definite of sv förintelse destruction, annihilation. Literally the destruction ("of Jews" is implied).
Cognate with de Vernichtung, a word used in Hitler's prophecy from the 30 January 1939 Reichstag speech. In 1963 the first Swedish translation of the book The Destruction of the European Jews was given the title Hur de europeiska judarna förintades. The word was then chosen as the Swedish title when the U.S. miniseries Holocaust (miniseries) Holocaust was broadcast in 1979, after which the name stuck.Roland Loefler Så gick det till när ”Förintelsen” kom till Sverige https://www.dn.se/kultur/sa-gick-det-till-nar-forintelsen-kom-till-sverige/ Dagens Nyheter 25 January 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20230511131715/https://www.dn.se/kultur/sa-gick-det-till-nar-forintelsen-kom-till-sverige/ 11 May 2023
