Etymology
Potentially attested as lechinke [read: lethinge] in the second half of the 13th century, attested with certainty as aesterletzenze in 1402. Borrowed from nl fy Easterlittens, derived in turn from a compound of nl ofs āsta east-, eastern and either ofs Lêta a personal name or ofs *leta watercourse suffixed with the collectivising suffix ofs -ingi-. The element fy easter was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Westerlittens.
