Etymology 1
From de gmh buoche, from de goh buohha, from de gmw-pro *bōku and gmw-pro *bōkijā (both “beech”). The first West Germanic form corresponds to ang bōc, ofs bōk, the second to ang bēċe (en beech), nl beuk, lb Bich. The Standard German form can continue either variant, in the first case regularly, in the second with Upper German umlaut hindrance before velar (cf. de suchen).
