fi ii- salmi strait, sound, from older fi *Idensalmi, fi *Iidensalmi. Possibly ultimately from the fi smi word for night (smi-pro *ijë), either as the name for a place to stay the night, or in reference to a strait or sound perhaps between bodies of water with fi Ii- in their names. The exact origin is however unknown.
