Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Iteram in 1143. Compound of nl neer lower and the hydronym nl Itter. The hydronym in turn derives from either nl ine-pro *id- swell, engorge or ine-pro *ajadh- bright, clear. The prefix nl neer was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from nl Opitter. Compare nl Itteren and nl Ittervoort.
See also li Itter.
